“Managed Lives in the Obamacare Era and Beyond”: New BusinessOne Technologies Report Examines Trends

BENSALEM, Pa. – May 1, 2017 – “Managed Lives in the Obamacare Era and Beyond,” a comprehensive trend report issued today by BusinessOne Technologies, Inc., reports that the overall number of U.S. managed lives – individuals whose access to healthcare services and prescription drugs is administered by a third-party payer – increased by 18% over the Obama years (2009-2016). Commercial insurance, including employer-sponsored benefits, remained the largest segment of the managed lives market. But government programs were the fastest growing – Medicaid due to expansion under the Affordable Care Act (ACA, also called Obamacare), and Medicare because of population aging. Between 2009 and the close of 2016, the number of people enrolled in managed Medicaid plans increased by 87% while commercial managed care plan enrollment increased by just 5% in the same period. BusinessOne Technologies, Inc., is a leading healthcare business solutions company focused on managed markets. With U.S. healthcare spend exceeding $3 trillion annually and representing nearly 18% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), managed lives fluctuations have a sweeping impact on all healthcare stakeholders. Even small shifts within a payer segment can significantly affect market share and cost trends. “Repealing and replacing Obamacare remains a priority for the new Administration and there appears to be bipartisan acknowledgement that some aspects of the program need repair, even though there’s no consensus on how that would be accomplished,” said James Barone, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of BusinessOne. “Any policy changes that alter access to care and reimbursement will significantly impact the managed markets landscape for pharmaceutical and biotech manufacturers, payers, PBMs and specialty pharmacies. This report benchmarks the current managed lives environment within its historical context and looks ahead to potential post-Obamacare challenges for healthcare stakeholders.” “Managed Lives in the Obamacare Era and Beyond” examines national and state shifts in managed lives since passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, and what is behind them. The report is presented in four sections:
  • Part 1: Managed Lives and the U.S. Healthcare Model
  • Part 2: Commercial, Medicaid and Medicare Trends in the Obamacare Era
  • Part 3: Post-Obamacare Managed lives
  • Part 4: Managed Lives Snapshots – Top 10 States by Population
“As a leading provider of managed markets data solutions, BusinessOne is uniquely qualified to compile and analyze this information. To help stakeholders keep abreast of managed lives trends, we plan to issue updated reports annually,” Barone said.
